Kosmea 20th Anniversary Rose Hip Oil

If you've been reading my blog for a while now, you would know my LOVE for Australian natural beauty brand Kosmea. As a blogger, I'm constantly rotating the products in my skin care routine to try and test out new things for you all. In saying this, I always find myself gravitating back towards my must have Kosmea Apple of My Eye Cream and Certified Organic Rose Hip Oil. Kosmea have recently turned 20, and to celebrate the amazing milestone, they have released a Limited Edition gold packaged CO Rose Hip Oil. I was lucky enough to have a little chat with Kosmea Founder Marie Jenkins to talk all about the company's growing success, beauty secrets, new products and of course, all things rose hip oil...

Firstly, a huge congratulations on your 20-year milestone! Can you tell us what you had in mind when you first founded Kosmea all those years ago?
I was a stay-at-home mum with three young children when I first got the idea, back in 1993, to launch my own skin care business. I’ve always had a passion for natural skin care and mixing up my own concoctions using ingredients like avocado, yoghurt and herbs – being of Greek origin, my mother had always taught us the natural way whether it was with food, medicine or skin care. One day, I was mixing up a mask recipe that called for rose hips, so I headed to a local rose farm in Willunga, SA, and asked them if I could pick some of their rose hips. They gladly obliged and handed me an article about the healing and nourishing qualities of rose hips and rose hip oil – how it was being used in hospitals for healing burns and scar tissue.
I drove right home and started to research how I could get hold of some rose hip oil to bottle and sell. I found a supplier in Chile and sold the family car to buy my first drum of rose hip oil. And that’s how Kosmea was born. My family and I spent long days and nights around the kitchen table, filling and labelling 4,000 bottles with the oil and over the next few weeks I visited every health food store in South Australia – about 80 stores in all. Rose hip oil wasn’t even heard of in Australia at this time. I gave each store owner a bottle to try, knowing that once they used it they’d be hooked.  Sure enough, within six month’s I’d sold all 4,000 bottles.
After that I secured a bank loan to buy more drums of rose hip oil and began to develop more skin care products for the range and, within a few years, we began exporting to Hong Kong, the UK, Canada and New Zealand.

Talk us through the launch of the new Limited Edition Rose Hip Oil.
As we are the pioneers of Rose Hip Oil in Australia, we felt it was fitting to showcase our hero product for our 20th year anniversary. We are proud that we are still the number one rose hip oil in the World. We go to great lengths to have the most premium product beginning with where and how it grows, using the fruit skin and the seed of the rose hip and through to how it is extracted and then finally how it is packed. This gives us the ability to say that our oil has up to eight times more vitamin A than any of our competitors. To coincide with our limited edition release, we decided that we would also do a temporary price reduction on the rose hip oil as our belief is that it should be accessible for everyone.

Speaking of the RH oil, why should we all start incorporating it into our current skincare routine? Can those with oily skin types use facial oils too?
Rose hip oil is so beneficial to any skin type, especially dry and ageing skin, but at the same time it can be used by oily and acne prone skin.  For ageing skin, the essential fatty acids and vitamin A are really great cell regenerators. In cases where oily, acne-prone skin has been stripped of all of its natural oils by a harsh oil-free cleanser, it can bring it back into a more balanced state. Also rose hip oil is anti-bacterial and anti-inflammatory therefore making it a powerful healer for oily and acne prone skin.

We’re all big fans of the RH oil and the Apple of My Eye Cream here at The VR Verdict, what are your must have Kosmea products?
Ooh that’s a hard one as they are all my favourites! If I had to pick two I would say the Radiance 24/7 Youth Boost and the Eighth Natural Wonder® Revitalising Facial Serum.  These are both very powerful anti-ageing products.

Your beauty knowledge must be incredible, what are your top tips/beauty secrets you’ve acquired over the years for maintaining healthy, radiant looking skin?
The biggest beauty tip I can give is to be Holistic in everything you do as it’s not only about the external but the internal. It is so, so important to steer clear of alcohol, caffeine and nicotine, to eat clean whole foods and try for a vegetarian style diet, (ie limit the amount of red meat, and try to stick to seafood.) Also I think stress plays a big part in unbalancing our skin so keep it to a minimum. So in a nut shell, think positive, eat clean, and look after your skin by using clean organic skincare products.

What can we expect to see from Kosmea in the near future? Any new products we can look forward to?
Yes we are working on some exciting new products. 2015 will see us expand into some luxurious hand and body products and lip treatments. It’s all very exciting!

Enjoy

  2. Rose hips oil is cold pressed and is one of nature's blessed answers to skin blemishes, scars and wounds. The seeds of the hips make up about 70% of the fruit and it is these seeds that are crushed to make the oil. These oils are omega-3 rich and have shown fantastic benefits for use on the skin, sun burn, age spots and old scars.
