Ask Vydia: Health and Fitness Advice

So I've been constantly getting a crap tonne of questions regarding my diet and if I workout a lot and if so, what do I do and everything else fitness related under the sun. 

Now I'm definitely not an expert on this topic, ask me about what I wear when I work out and I'll more than likely be able to help but probs not with this stuff. Which is why I've enlisted the help of my lovely soon-to-be-nutritionist friend Sarra Essa, who also runs one of my favourite instas called Toned Tanned and Fit (@tonedtannedandfit). Sarra has kindly offered to be my guest editor for this post and share with you guys some of her incredible knowledge. Let's go.

Tips on starting out your fitness journey:
1. Set goals as well as reasons as to why you have started this fitness journey, that way when you feel like quitting you know why you started and why you should keep going
2. Prepare your meals - if you have to be up early the next morning or simply don't have the time during the day to prepare a healthy meal, do all of your prep the night before or on the weekends (basically during any free time)
3. Make exercise fun! Use equipment around the house, play with younger siblings or children, pick up a sport, etc
4. Find a photo of someone you can realisticaly aspire to look like, and keep it somewhere to constantly remind you
5. Surrond yourself with like minded, encouraging and positive people who will support you rather than go against your lifestyle

Progress is progress, no matter how big or how small. If your body is changing, no matter how small that change is – it is still change! Don’t be discouraged by women who have reached their ultimate body, they had to get there somehow. Train like an athlete, eat like a nutritionist, sleep like a baby!

Should we invest in a personal trainer or train individually? 
Personally, I train by myself because I am motivated, willing to research exercises and try new things and can push myself – if you’re like this too I would stick to working out by yourself. If you need that extra push (which is common) or if you aren’t educated in the exercise department and find it difficult to use the gym equipment then I think a personal trainer is for you!

The top health mistakes we’re making
* Heading straight for the products that say “99% fat free” or those of similar statements. Usually those products can be high in sugar or salt etc which can impact negatively on your health
* Not looking at the ingredients list on products – it’s not about looking at the nutrient content table anymore (although that is still very important and needs to be taken into account) it’s more about looking at the ingredients list!!! Make sure you can pronounce the ingredients and know what they are before putting them into your body

5 eating habits we should adopt NOW?
1.  Drink at least 2 litres of water a day
2. Drink Green Tea
3. Incorporate super foods into your lifestyle (goji berries, chia seeds) 
4. Snack on nuts
5. Eat smaller meals more regularly

Tips on consuming more water every day
* Try adding lemon to your water- not only are you disguising the flavour of water but you’re also receiving all of the added health benefits of lemon (i.e. natural energizer, boosts immune system and abolishes acne)
*Carry a water bottle with you wherever you go, you’re more likely to drink it if it’s accessible

There are other sources of staying hydrated without drinking water in its natural form, such as:
* Eating fruit and vegetables – cucumber and watermelon are high in water
* Try eating foods with higher water content over other foods that don't (e.g. choose an orange over a banana)
* Consider a caffeine free diet (caffeine can dehydrate you)

Small changes we can make overall to improve our wellness and make our lives more happy, positive and forward looking:
Personally, I try to eliminate any negative energy in my life; of course there will be a lot of times where that will be unrealistic, so a few things I like to do to keep me positive are:
* Write positive quotes on post-it notes and leave them around your room
* Set your lock screen wall paper to something that makes you smile
* Smile in front of the mirror every morning! (as ridiculous as it sounds – it works!!)
* Wake up early and go for a quick walk – your mind and body will love you for it!
* Take a bath every now and then
* Try meditating
* Practice yoga
The list is endless, but those are a few things that I find work for me!
